Shoes and socks come in pairs because we have two feet. However, some things that are single objects are also described as pairs. You can buy a pair of pants, but it has two legs, not two pants. A pair of glasses has two lenses. A pair of binoculars is similar. You can also use “pair” to describe two of anything. A pair of binoculars is only enough for one person, but a pair of telescopes is enough for two.

It is very easy to confuse “lay” and “lie” in English. In the present tense, “lay” means to set something down (it takes an object). “Lie” means to rest on a surface (it doesn’t take an object). It is more confusing because the past tense of “lie” is also “lay” (the past tense of “lay” is “laid”). So yesterday, the hen laid an egg, and now, I will lie on the couch.

Delicate Arch is an amazing rock formation located in the state of Utah. It is 20 meters tall. Its shape looks like a pair of legs. It is made of sandstone that was worn away by the weather to form an arch.

A ruler is a smooth, straight stick with lines that can be used to measure length. A longer ruler can also be called a measuring stick. In the U.S. most people use inches, but sometimes we also need to use centimeters, like the rest of the world. So most rulers in the U.S. have inches on one side and centimeters on the other.
