“Good luck in your school play. You’re gonna knock ‘em dead.”
To “knock them dead” sounds like killing people by hitting them, but it actually just means to impress the audience with a good performance.
「文化祭の演劇頑張ってね。きっと大成功だよ。」
「Knock them dead」と聞くと「殴って殺す」というようなイメージを持ちますが、実際は演技・演奏などで観客を感動させることです。
“Your math scores are really good, but your English needs work.”
“The car still needs some work before I will be able to drive it.”
If something “needs work” it means there are tasks that must be completed in order for it to be good quality. It can also mean that a skill or ability needs to be practiced or studied more or harder (such as a school subject).
「数学の成績はとてもいいんだけど英語はまだまだだね。」
「車が運転できるようになるまでにはまだまだやることが残っている。」
何かが「needs work」ということは、良いクォリティーにするにはまだやることがあるという意味です。例えば学校の授業などでも使えますが、技術や能力など、もっと練習しないと、もっと勉強をがんばらないといけないということになります。
“He jumped the gun by assigning blame before seeing the evidence.”
To “jump the gun” is to start running before the starting gun of a race. We can use it to describe any situation in which someone does something too soon.
「証拠を確認する前に犯人を決めつけたのは早とちりだった。」
「Jump the gun」とはレースでスタートの合図の銃が鳴る前に走り出すことです。誰かが何かをする時、早まった行動をした時に使えます。
“The accident sparked a debate about the current safety measures.”
A spark can start a fire. (Perhaps you’ve seen someone start a fire by striking two pieces of flint together to make a spark.) In this phrase, something starts not a fire but a debate. We talk about debates with some of the same language as fire: A debate rages. A debate can be heated.
「その事故が現在の安全対策についての討論を引き起こした。」
火花から火が起きることがあります。（火打石で火花を出して火をつけるのを見たことがあるかもしれません。）このフレーズでは、火ではなく討論が起きます。討論は火と同じ言葉を使って表現されます。「激しく燃える」とも「怒る」とも受け取れる「rage」。討論も「熱く」なります。
Classroom Tip
This song from Happy Valley Phonics Book 1, Unit 4, introduces vocabulary that begin with the i, j, and k sounds. Use gestures for the words and do them as you sing along. Put the flashcards on the ground and ask What does Iggy want? Have students say or touch the words that start with the same sound. As they improve, put the letters i, j, and k on the ground and say a word. Students touch the beginning letter. Let students be the teacher and say the words for their classmates to say. See if they know other words that start with those sounds. Bring in some other objects that start with the same sounds; if students know the words, see if they can match it to one of the sounds. If they don’t know what something is, have them ask What is it? or What are they? After you provide the answer, see if they can match it to one of the sounds. In the case of the i sound, it is more often heard in the middle of a word, like pin or hip. See if students can hear the i sound in those words too, by saying them with an emphasis on the middle sound.

This song from Happy Valley Phonics Book 1, Unit 4, introduces vocabulary that begin with the i, j, and k sounds. Use gestures for the words and do them as you sing along. Then, see if you can find these same objects or other objects with the same sounds in your house. Do you have a jump-rope, kite or other toys that start with these sounds? How about food in jars or your keys? Why not give your child a kiss? The i sound is used more as a middle sound in words like kiss, pin, pillow or sit. Say the words emphasizing the middle sound whilst looking at the objects or doing the actions.

“She has a bun in the oven.”
This sentence means that she’s pregnant! The bun is not actually a small piece of bread, but a baby. The oven is the mother’s belly. This phrase first appeared around the 1950s.

“I realized I had left my keys inside. Then I felt a raindrop. The sky was gray and cloudy. I said to myself, this is going to get worse before it gets better.”
This phrase can be heard when a bad situation appears to be getting worse. However, it also includes hope that the problem will eventually be solved, even if it is difficult and unpleasant in the meantime.
「鍵を中に忘れたと気づき、さらに雨が降りそうな気がした。空は灰色で曇っているし。これは良くなる前に悪い方向にすすむな、と思った。」

“In my book” means “in my opinion”. Imagine you wrote down everything you believed in a book. The book would explain all your opinions and judgments.
