ゴールデンウイークですね。そこでこんな話題を。
Holiday と Vacation、どっちを使うか迷ったことありませんか？
どっちも基本的には同じです。
イギリス英語ではholiday、アメリカ英語ではvacationのようです。ですが、アメリカ英語ではクリスマスや祝日をholidayというようです。
ちなみにイギリスでは祝日を bank holidayと言います。

Classroom Tip
This song from the final unit of Happy Valley Phonics Book 1, Unit 9, introduces vocabulary that begin with the x, y and z sounds. Use gestures for the words and do them as you sing along. Put the flashcards on the ground and ask, What does Loxy have? Have students say or touch the words that start (or end) with the same sound. As they improve, put the letters x, y, z on the ground and say a word. Students touch the beginning letter (or final letter, in the case of x). Let students be the teacher and say the words for their classmates to match. See if they know other words with those sounds. Bring in some other objects that have the same sounds; if students know the word, see if they can match it to one of the sounds. If they don’t know what something is, have them ask What is it? or What are they? After you provide the answer, see if they can match it to one of the sounds. As students now have done all the sounds, see if you can use the letter cards and slowly make simple three letter words, like c-a-t. Use gestures for the sounds, slowly blending them. This is just an early introduction to the idea of blending, so there is no pressure for them to read. Just have fun combining sounds.

フォニックスブック1、ユニット9のこの歌は x, y, z の音で始まるボキャブラリーを紹介します。ジェスチャーをしながら一緒に歌いましょう。フラッシュカードを床において「What does Loxy have?」とききます。生徒がキャラクターの名前と同じ文字で始まる（または終わる）言葉を言う、もしくはそのカードにタッチします。上達してきたら、x, y, z の文字が書かれたカードを床において単語を言います。生徒がその単語の頭文字（もしくは最後の文字）にタッチします。次は生徒に先生役をしてもらい、他の生徒に単語を言ってもらいましょう。他にこの文字ではじまる単語を知っているかな？この文字が入った単語の物を用意して知っているかきいてみます。知っていたら、音とマッチさせましょう。知らない場合は「What is it?」や「What are they?」と質問させましょう。答えを教えた後は音とマッチさせます。これですべての音を覚えたはずですので、文字のカードを使ってc-a-tなど簡単な三文字単語を作ってみましょう。音ごとにジェスチャーを使って、ゆっくりブレンドしましょう。ブレンディングを初めて教える感じで、いきなり読む必要はありません。音と音を合体させて楽しめばいいです。

Yams are popular in the US, especially around Thanksgiving time, and taste similar to Japanese sweet potatoes.

イギリスであることをして皆に「No!!!!」って言われたことがあります。
それは、家の中で傘を開いた時のこと・・・。
建物の中で傘を開くと悪いことが起こると言われています。
傘を買うときに開いて絵柄とか見るときはどうするんだろ？
あと、悪いことが起こらないように、「touch wood」と言って木材を触ることがあります。例えば、「毎日運転してるけど、交通事故を起こしたことないんだよね～、touch wood」と言って手の届くところにある木でできたものに触ります。
おまじないみたいな感じかな。

同じ英語ですがイギリス英語とアメリカ英語ではスペルが違いうものがあります。
一部を紹介しますね。
colour （英） color （米）
centre (英) center （米）
favourite （英） favorite （米）
licence （英） license （米）
同じスペルでも発音が違うものもありますよ。
ｏｆｔｅｎ
日本の学校ではアメリカ英語がほとんどですので、「オフン」と読みますが、イギリス英語では「オフトゥン」と読みます。

アジアを旅行すると、面白いことや新しい発見が多い。
インドネシアのバリ島。田舎を貧乏旅行していると地元の人と仲良くなりますよね。不思議なのは、おなじ名前の人がめちゃくちゃ多いってこと。聞いてみると男女関係なく生まれた順番で名前が決まってるんだって。
第一子がワヤン、第二子がマデ、第三子がニョマン、第四子がクトゥ。ワヤンの数ハンパない！道端で「ワヤン～～～！」って叫んだら、結構な人数が振り返りました（笑） みんな優しくていい人でしたよ。

little と a little 見た感じよく似てますが、意味はどうでしょう？
I have little money. 「お金がない」
I have a little money. 「お金がある」
little money の方は、「お金がない」というネガティブな意味になります。
a little money の方は、お金がないと思ってたけど、ちょっとあった！というイメージでボジティブな意味になります。
英語は奥が深い。。。

This song from Happy Valley Phonics Book 1, Unit 8, introduces vocabulary that begin with the u, v and w sounds. Use gestures for the words and do them as you sing along. Once students are familiar with the vocabulary, put the flashcards on the ground and ask students What does Uncle have? Students say or touch the words that start with the same sound. As they improve, put the letters u, v and w on the ground and say a word. Students touch the beginning letter. Let students be the teacher and say the words for their classmates to match to the letter. See if they know other words that start with those sounds. Bring in some other objects that start with the same sounds; if students know the words, see if they can match them to one of the sounds. If they don’t know what something is, have them ask What is it? or What are they? After you provide the answer, see if they can match it to one of the sounds. Can they think of other words that begin with the sounds? Vest, very, watch, wink, etc. all start with these sounds. U, like other vowels, is often heard in the middle of a word, like sun, hug or cup. See if students can hear the u sound in those words, too, by saying them with an emphasis on the middle sound.

海外で生活すると、日本に比べて値段が高いな〜って思うものが結構あります。
トイレットペーパーがその一つ！めちゃくちゃ高い。私の知ってるオーストラリアやイギリスは、日本だったら12ロール買える値段で4ロールしか買えない。紙質も微妙～。ティッシュペーパーも高い高い！日本みたいに5箱セットで売ってないし、1箱が日本の5箱セットの値段。もったいなくてむやみやたらに鼻もかめない！
もちろん道でティッシュも配ってないしね。なんであんなに高いんだろ？

みなさんが知ってるこの単語、student（生徒）をちゃんと使えていますか？
「生徒」という場合、イギリスでは大学生はStudentで、高校生、中学生、小学生はpupil なんです。アメリカでは小学生を pupil と言います。
みんなStudentではないんですね～。
