Halloweenハロウィーンの本当の意味を知っていますか？
Halloween の語源は Hallow Eveだそうです。
Hallowはholy（神聖な）で、Eveはday before（前日）って意味です。
11月1日はAll Saints Day（諸聖人の日）、すべての聖人を記念する日なんですって。
つまり、ハロウィーンは聖人を称える日の前日ですね。この前日には悪霊がやってくるということで、あのような仮装をするようになったんでしょうね。

街中はハロウィーン一色ですね。飾りつけの中に黒猫black catを見かけることがあります。西洋のお話の中に黒猫は「魔女の使い」として登場するようです。日本でも黒猫を見ると縁起が悪いと言われますが、イギリスでは逆に縁起が良く、見かけると幸運がくると言われているそうです。

スチューデントブック2のユニット6に出てくるこのチャントでは、ハッピーバレー1よりもさらに多くの体の部分を紹介します。ストーリータイムの後に動画を再生して、自分の体のその部分を指さすことができるかどうかチェックしましょう。もう一度動画をみてから、「What’s the Matter?」を歌います。ハチ（ハッピーバレー1ユニット8）やクラゲ（PhonanimalsのJilly Jellyfish）のフラッシュカードを使って、生徒が体のパーツが描かれたカードで触って「Ouch!」と言います。皆が「What’s the matter?」とききます。生徒が「My … hurts」で答えたら、痛いところにつける絆創膏をもらいます。上達していくと、ハッピーバレー1ユニット7の体の部分も復習して使いましょう。もう一人の生徒が看護師になって絆創膏を「Here you are」と言って渡します。
Classroom Tip
This chant from Happy Valley Student Book 2, Unit 6, introduces more body parts. After Storytime, watch the video and see if students point to their body parts. Do it again. After, sing What’s the Matter? Using the flash cards for bee (HV1 Unit 8) and Jilly Jellyfish (Phonanimals), students can take a card and touch it to a body part, saying Ouch! Everyone ask, What’s the matter? Using the target chunk My… hurts to answer, the student can receive a band-aid and put it on the place that was stung. As students get better, review Happy Valley 1 Unit 7 body parts, adding them to the game. Another student could pretend to be the nurse, giving the band-aid, Here you are.

This chant from Happy Valley Student Book 2, Unit 6, introduces more body parts. Watch the video and point to the body parts. Do it again. Kids love band-aids, so ready a box and, using a toy hammer or other soft toy, pretend you got hurt. Say, Ouch! My… hurts. Your child can give you a band-aid, saying Here you are, or put it on you directly. Have a good laugh when it’s time to band-aid your mouth! Switch when they are ready to say what hurts.

海外でレンタカーをしたことはありますか？私はイギリスとアメリカでしたことがあります。いくつか難関がありますよね～。
まず、道路。イギリスは日本と同じですが、アメリカは逆ですよね。
イギリスでレンタカーした時、「日本と一緒だから楽勝！」と思っていたらとんでもない！まず、オートマの車が少ない！ちゃんと「オートマ」ってリクエストしないとミッションの車になりますよ！
想像していなかった難関がガソリンスタンド。「レギュラーガソリン」は英語でUnleadedと言います。覚えておきましょう。

商品名がそのまま動詞や名詞になっている単語がたくさんありますね。
よく聞くのがxeroxです。日本語ではコピー機のゼロックス。英語では「コピーをとる」という時にxeroxを動詞として使います。（例）He xeroxed the documents.
名詞ではkleenex ティッシュペーパーのクリネックス。ティッシュと言わずにkleenexと呼ぶそうです。（例）Do you have a kleenex?”
最近ではGoogleを動詞として使います。日本語でも同じくググるって言いますよね。
（例）Did you google it?

イギリスの通貨は￡ポンドってことは皆さん知っていますよね。英語では「パウンド」って
発音します。でもね、別の呼び方もあるんですよ！それは、「quid 発音はクイッド」です。
例えば「10ポンド」は「10クイッド」って感じ。quidはカジュアルな表現でよく耳にしますので覚えておくと便利です。ちなみに硬貨のペンスは「p ピー」って言ってたなぁ。

午前と午後を表すA.M. と P.M. 正しく使えていますか？
よくこの様に「AM6:00」と書いているのをよく見かけますがこれは間違いです。正しくは数字の後です。英語圏の国では小文字で「6:00 a.m.」と書くのが一般的のようです。
また、「.」も必ず入れてくださいね！

This chant from Happy Valley Student Book 2, Unit 3, introduces popular sea creatures. After Storytime, watch the video and see if students can point to the animals in the book. Then play it again imitating the animals using gestures. After, sing the I See a Shark song, to help them remember the target language chunk I see a… Finally, roleplay being in an aquarium. Have one student be the visitor and the others be the sea creatures swimming around doing the gestures. The visitor has to say what they see, for example, I see a shark. The shark student has to sit down where they are, while the others continue to swim around until all have been seen by the visitor. As students get better at saying the language chunk, set a timer to increase fluency. Can they say that they see all of the animals in one minute? Remind students, if they can’t remember the word, to point to the matching flash card.

スチューデントブック2のユニット3に出てくるこのチャントでは、みんなが大好きな海の生き物を紹介します。ストーリータイムの後に動画を再生して、スチューデントブックの中の動物を指さしてみましょう。もう一度見て動物を真似るジェスチャーを加えます。その後は、I See a Sharkの歌を歌って、「I see a…」というフレーズをしっかり覚えましょう。最後に水族館にいるシチュエーションのロールプレイをします。一人の生徒がお客さんになり、他の生徒はジェスチャーをしながら泳ぐ海の生き物になります。お客さん役の生徒は何が見えるかを言います。例えば、I see a shark. と言ったら、サメ役の生徒はその場に座ります。他の生き物役の生徒は名前が出るまで泳ぎ続けます。上手になったらタイマーを使います。1分ですべての生き物を「I see a」を使って言えるかな？単語が思い出せない時はフラッシュカードを指さしてもいいですよ。

皆さん、月の中に何が見えますか？
日本では「ウサギ」ですが、海外では違うって良く聞きますよね。
私が旅行中に聞いた中では、「人の横顔」「カニ」「ライオン」「ワニ」「ロバ」ってのがありました。
お隣の韓国も日本と同じで「ウサギ」でしたよ！

今年のお月見はきれいに見えましたね。
さて、「お月見」は英語で何というでしょうか？答えはmoon viewingです。
満月はfull moon 半月はhalf moon 三日月はcrescent moonと言います。
moonつながりでハネムーンはhoneymoonですね。どうしてmoonが付くのでしょう？
honey蜜とmoon月、「結婚後の一か月間」って意味だそうです。
