“So you want to write a book? First things first: do you have an idea for the story?” 「小説を書くんだって？じゃ、まずはストーリーだね。アイデアはあるのか？」
First things firstとは、ちゃんと最初から始まるよう、もしくは大事なことを先に済ませるように言い聞かせるのに使う、「最初のことは最初にやる」「最初には最初のこと」という意味の表現です。
We sometimes say “first things first” to remind ourselves or others to start from the beginning of any task, or to take care of important things before unimportant things.

Classroom Tip
After the Hello, Hello Song, use this Storytime video to introduce the Happy Valley 3 Unit 8 vocabulary and target language. Before playing the video, talk about the picture, doing Picture Talk to see what students notice. Then play the video. After, play the Unit 8 chants and follow the lesson plan, choosing an activity students would like as follow-up, or bring in as much realia as possible, and as you watch the video, students can set the table, placing the items down as they see/hear them. Or, after the video, say the items and have students set the table. Flashcards can also be used, though using realia always adds to the fun! Bring in a tablecloth if you have one to make it even more real. Remember to have them find the 8 grey targets in the picture, too!

Hello, Hello Songの後に、このストーリータイム動画でハッピーバレー3ユニット8のボキャブラリーとターゲットランゲージを紹介します。動画の前にピクチャートークで生徒が何に気づくか見てみましょう。動画のあとは、ユニット8のチャントをしてから、レッスンプランに沿ってフォローアップアクティビティーをします。または、本物のお皿などを使って聞いたり見たりした通りに食卓の準備をしてもらいましょう。または動画を見たあとに、先生が言うものをテーブルに置いてもらいましょう。フラッシュカードを使っても良いですが、本物を使うとより楽しいですよ！８つの灰色のターゲットをみつけるのもお忘れなく！

“Was that an insult? Do you want a piece of me?” 「今なんて言った？喧嘩を売ってるのか？」
Do you want a piece of me?とはつまり、「喧嘩したいのか？」という意味です。言い方はなんだか喋るケーキが「一切れをどうぞ」と言っているような言い回しですが、本当は腹が立って喧嘩を買おうとしている台詞です。
“Do you want a piece of me?” means “Are you looking for a fight?” It sounds like a talking cake offering to share a piece of itself, but in fact, it’s something a person might say when insulted and angry.

“You don’t have to take my word for it. Go see for yourself.” 「（私の言葉で）信じなくてもいいよ。自分で見に行きなさい。」
“I don’t have the letter anymore, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.” 「あの手紙はもうないから私の言葉を信じるしかない。」
Take their wordとは他に証拠がなくてもその言葉を信じるということです。しないなら、自分で確認してから信じます。
If you take someone’s word for something, you believe them without any other evidence that what they say is true. If you don’t take their word for it, you confirm by checking for yourself.
