“Come on, they’re just dying to meet you!” 「皆すごく会いたがってるよ！」
“She has a new book? You must be dying to read it!” 「新しい本が出た？死ぬほど読みたいんだろうね。」
誰かが何かを「するために死んでいる」という風に聞こえるでしょうけど、それがものすごくしたい、ものすごく楽しみにしているという意味で使います。待ちきれない！あまりにも楽しみで、死ぬほどそれがしたいという感じで使います。
If someone is “dying to” do something, it means they’re very eager to do it. They can’t wait. They want to do it so badly, it might feel like they are dying.
Classroom Tip
After the Hello, Hello Song, use this Storytime video to introduce the Happy Valley 3 Unit 9 vocabulary and target language. Before playing the video, talk about the picture, doing Picture Talk to see what students notice. Then play the video. After, play the Unit 9 chants and follow the lesson plan, choosing an activity students would like as follow-up, or bring in as much realia as possible. This unit repeats in, on, under from Unit 5 and adds in by, and is great for realia. You can also ask questions like in other units, asking before and pausing the video so students can answer, or asking after with the picture showing. Remember to have them find the 9 grey targets in the picture, too!

“It bothers my wife when I fold down the corner of the page in a book to mark my place, but I just can’t seem to kick the habit.” 「しおりの代わりにページの角を折ると妻が怒るけど、どうしてもやめられないみたい。」
悪い癖をやめようとしますが、難しい事です。ずっとしているけどやめたいことがある。失敗した時には「can’t kick the habit」と言ったりします。成功したら「kicked the habit」と言います。タバコやお酒の話題が出た時によく使われるフレーズです。
People often try to give up bad habits, but it’s difficult. When you have been doing something for a long time and want to stop, if you fail, you might say that you “can’t kick the habit”. If you succeed, you “kicked the habit”. This phrase is often used with things like smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol.

何かをpull offするとは難しいことを成功させることです。スケートボードの技から難しい歌のパフォーマンス、選挙での勝利、なんにでも使えるフレーズです。
To pull something off is to succeed at a difficult task. It could be anything from a skateboard trick to performing a difficult song to winning an election.

“He seemed honest at first but soon I smelled a rat.” 「最初はまとめな人だと思ったけど怪しいにおいがしてきた。」
「smell a rat」とは、何かおかしなことがあったり、騙そうとしている何かがある時「怪しいと思う」という意味で使います。人や出来事が怪しく思えてきたとき、特にまだその理由がはっきりしないときに使うことがあります。
If you “smell a rat”, you start to think that there is some trickery or deception going on. You might use this phrase if a person or event seems suspicious, especially if you haven’t quite figured out why yet.
