“Sounds like you’re really stuck between a rock and a hard place.”

A rock and a hard place are two bad options. A rock is hard, so they are basically the same. If you have a choice, but both options are equally bad, you can use this idiom.

「どうすればいいのかわからない。理想の仕事を選んだら、彼氏と別れて引っ越さないといけない。もし彼をとったら、この嫌な仕事を続けないといけない」
「板挟み状態だね」

「岩」と「硬いところ」はどちらも良い選択ではありません。岩も硬いので、どっちも同じです。どちらかを選んでも問題があるときにこのイディオムを使ってみてください。
