“What’s the matter, cat got your tongue?”
If someone can’t speak (perhaps because they are nervous or afraid) we say the cat has got their tongue. This idiom probably appears most often as a question. If someone is not speaking, you can ask this to jokingly ask if they are too nervous.
「どうした、猫に舌をとられたのか？」
人は、緊張している、怖い、などの理由でしゃべれないときは、猫に舌をとられたと言います。このイディオムはよく質問の形で現れます。何もしゃべらない人を軽くからかって、猫に舌をとられたのかとききます。
