授業で家の色々な部屋に家具や人を描いて楽しんだことがあります。今回は生徒たちに自分の家の地図や設計図や絵を描いてもらいました。次は家の中に人を置いてみました。想像力を働かせて人の代わりにかわいい動物を置いた生徒も多かったです！
We’ve had many fun classes drawing furniture and people in different rooms of houses. This time, some of our students drew maps, blueprints, or just pictures of their houses. Then we added some people to the houses. Some students got creative and added cute animals instead!

家族についてどれくらい詳しく知っていますか？最近生徒たちに簡単なファミリーツリーを作ってもらいました。この木の枝や葉っぱが両親、祖父母、いとこです。木の根っこの部分は自分です！
How much do you know about your family? Recently we had some of our students make a simple family tree. The leaves and branches of your family tree are your parents, grandparents, great grandparents and cousins. The root of your family tree is you!
年に数回季節に合ったクラフトをします。今年の春はhttps://bokoco.com/にあるAwesome DIY for Kids 2という本から木の作品を取り上げました。色々な色の紙を共有することで「Do you want blue？」などの教室で役に立つ簡単な英語を使ういい機会になりました。
We do a fun seasonal craft a few times a year. This spring’s craft was paper trees, an idea we got from the book Awesome DIY for Kids 2 on https://bokoco.com/. Sharing paper strips for the leaves was a good chance to use simple classroom English like “Do you want blue?”
最初の方に試してみたテーマはお買い物です。ロールプレイにとても相性が良いです！おもちゃのレジやお金を使ってもいいですし、それがなくてもすでにあったおもちゃをお互いに売るロールプレイでも楽しいです。お店の品を紙やワイトボードで描くのも、フラッシュカードを使うのも良いです。ほとんどの子供はお店を運営するまねをして遊ぶので、そこに英語を追加すれば完璧！
One of the first themes we tried was shopping. It’s great for roleplays! You can get a toy cash register and money, but you can also just use any toys you happen to have to stock your students’ shop. Students can also draw things to buy and sell on paper or on the whiteboard, or use flashcards. Most kids enjoy pretending to run a shop, so all we have to do is add English!
動物を描いたり、動物と遊んだりするのは楽しくて想像力を伸ばしますが、他にも動物園で学べることがあります。あるアクティビティーで各生徒が動物についての文章が書いてあるページを選びました。本で調べて、欠けている単語を入れました。子供向けの動物図鑑はこのアクティビティーにもってこいですが、絵事典でもこれぐらいの基本情報はわかる場合もあります。何人かの生徒はその動物のことをもっと知りたくてネットで詳しく調べていました！
Drawing and playing with animals is fun and creative, but there are lots of other ways we can learn using the zoo. In one activity, students chose a sheet with a paragraph about an animal. Then they used books to find the information to fill in the missing words. Children’s books about animals are great for this activity, but some picture dictionaries also contain enough information to find these basic animal facts. Some students wanted to find out more about their animals and looked them up online!
「今月のテーマ」を始めたころのテーマは「動物園」！ほとんどの子供にとって動物はとても面白いトピックで、動物をもちいた、楽しくてその子の力を伸ばすアクティビティーがたくさんあります。あるクラスではおもちゃの動物を使って教室でMY動物園を作ったり、あるクラスでは紙に一人一人で自分だけの動物園をデザインしました。囲いを作ったり、かわいい動物を描いたりすることで想像力を育てます。そして、MY動物園はまだまだ始まりです！
One of the first monthly themes we introduced was “zoo”! Most kids find animals very interesting, and there are lots of fun and challenging activities we can do with animals. In some classes, we played with toy animals and made our own zoos in the classroom. Some classes drew their own zoos on paper. Making enclosures and drawing cute animals exercises our creativity! And making our own zoo is just the beginning!

We have added a new feature to our Modern English kids classes: portfolios. Does your child have a purple folder like this? Take a look inside. You can see small projects we have completed recently. We make many different things to put in the portfolios, letting kids practice creativity, critical thinking, research and other skills. The portfolio activities follow a theme that changes every month!

“I thought they would stay in New York forever, but they up and moved to California.” 「もう一生ニューヨークに住むだろうと思っていたら、急にカリフォルニアに引っ越してしまった。」
“I didn’t even know he had a girlfriend, and then he up and got married.” 「彼にガールフレンドがいるとさえ知らなかったのに急に結婚したんだよね。」
インフォーマルに喋る時、動詞の前に「up and」をつけることがあります。これは「急に」というように行動が急で予想外だったと言いたい時に使います。
Sometimes, in informal speech, people add “up and” before a verb to show that the action was sudden and unexpected.
