“You’re just going to have to own up to the fact that you told a lie.” 「嘘をついたと認めるしかないよ。」
間違った、悪いことをしてしまったときは選択肢が二つです。自分のしたことを認める（そして償う可能性も）、それとも何も悪いことしていないと言い張るか。悪い行いを認めたら、償うことや許されることへの第一歩です。
If you make a mistake or do something wrong, you have two choices. You can recognize that you did that (and maybe try to fix it), or you can insist that you didn’t do anything wrong. If you “own up to” your misdeeds, it’s the first step toward making up for them and perhaps being forgiven.
Classroom Tip
After the Hi, Hello Song, use this Storytime video to introduce the Happy Valley 2 Unit 6 vocabulary and target language. Before playing the video, talk about the picture, doing Picture Talk to see what students notice. After, play the Unit 6 chants and follow the lesson plan choosing an activity students would like as follow-up. Or, before moving onto the chants, if this is a class of students moving up from HV1 or generally a confident group, by the third lesson, you can play the story once and then as you play the video a second time, assign students a character and pause it after What’s the matter?, so that S can answer My … hurts. In the 4th lesson, play it once through and then, using the script as a guide, point to the characters and see who can answer the question What’s the matter? The students can pretend to be the characters, answering the questions. Remember to have them find the 6 grey targets in the picture, too!

“I know you are planning a surprise party for me.” “You do? Who spilled the beans?”
To spill the beans is to let out a secret. Another way to say the same thing is “to let the cat out of the bag.” In olden times, people would sell piglets in bags, but they tricked their customers by putting cats in the bags instead of pigs. When the cat got out of the bag, the lie was revealed!
「秘密のパーティーのことは知っているよ」「本当？誰がばらした？」
「豆をこぼす」ということは秘密をばらしてしまうという意味です。別の言い方は「猫を袋から出す」です。昔、袋に入っている子豚を売る人が、豚の変わりに猫を袋に入れて客を騙すことがありました。猫が袋から出たら嘘がばれてしまいました！

Sometimes we stretch the truth just a little bit. It’s not really a lie, but it’s not exactly true either. For example, we might say a long class was “five years long.” It was really only 2 hours long, but it felt even longer.
ときには人は真実を少しだけ曲げます。完全に嘘ではないが、完全に真実でもありません。例えば、とても長い授業は「5年間かかった」と口にします。本当は2時間の授業だったけど、それより長く感じた、ということです。
Outside most tourist areas, red telephone boxes are now uncommon. These have been updated to use cards (left) and cash.

This can mean “Don’t give up!” or “Wait a second!” We say it to encourage a friend who is having a difficult time. We also use it to tell someone to wait a short time. “Can I talk to you?” “Hold on a second while I save my file.”
これは「頑張れ」としても「ちょっと待って」としても使います。苦戦している友達を励ますときに使います。他に、少しだけ待ってほしいときにも使います。「話があるけど、いい？」「ちょっと待って、ファイルを保存するから」
